About Food Safety
The Food Safety Taskforce (FSTF) is an impartial panel of independent medical, veterinary and food safety advisors to guide communications from the Australian Egg Corporation on food safety, with a particular emphasis on safe food handling and Avian Influenza (AI). The information upon which this website is based has been identified by taskforce members and includes peer-reviewed scientific studies as well as statements and links to national and international health, food safety and agricultural regulatory bodies.
Current Status
- Australian poultry flocks are currently free from bird flu disease (H5N1)
- It is unlikely that bird flu will ever enter Australia as we are outside the flight path of most of the migratory water birds that can carry the disease
- Australia has one of the best systems in the world for keeping our poultry flocks disease free
- Australia has very high standards of farming practice compared with many of the countries that have experienced outbreaks of bird flu
